Bringing together work from Carpentry & Joinery, Wood Machining and Blacksmithing students, the event celebrated their outstanding achievements whilst giving them valuable real-world experience of presenting their work to a public audience.

Visitors were treated to an impressive range of pieces, many of which demonstrated remarkable ambition in both design and execution.

From finely crafted furniture and joinery projects to expertly forged metalwork, the exhibition highlighted the dedication, perseverance, and developing craftsmanship of each and every student.

Every piece on display reflected significant skill development, with many achieving an exceptionally high standard of finish and attention to detail.

The event also celebrated student success through a series of awards, recognising outstanding achievement, commitment, and craftsmanship.

These included the highly coveted Best in Show award, won by Anna Mallock, which acknowledged a project that exemplified excellence in both creativity and technical accomplishment.

Anna also won a Progression Award due to securing a university place at the renowned West Dean College.

Fraser Johnson was named the winner of the Outstanding Achievement in Wood Machining award for his exemplary work, calm, consistent and mature approach to leading others in the classroom and placing runner-up in the national qualifiers at an illustrious Skillbuild cabinetmaking competition.

William Burtenshaw also won a Progression Award, as he too has received a place at West Dean College. Skye Graham received the Outstanding Achievement in Furniture Design and Making award.

Overall, the exhibition was a fantastic celebration of student achievement and the vibrant culture of making within the college, providing an inspiring platform for learners to share their work, engage with visitors, and take pride in their accomplishments.

Sam Kilby, Associate Lecturer in Furniture Making, said: “What a fantastic inaugural event. I am blown away by the level of skill shown in producing the work on display. Craft skills are incredibly hard to learn, and the level of commitment and enthusiasm shown by students throughout their study has come to fruition tonight.

“I would also like to thank all of our teaching and support staff – it really is a huge team effort, and they go above and beyond to achieve these results with our students. The next steps for some of our highest achievers will be to enter the New Furniture Makers Exhibition, where again, they will be afforded the opportunity to exhibit their work and also enter awards against the best examples of student furniture making in the country.”
