COURSE OVERVIEW
This course, formerly known in the industry as CS30, provides candidates with a thorough understanding of Chainsaw Maintenance, safe operation as well as cross cutting of timber.
You will cover:
- Workshop safety awareness
- Guide bar, saw chain and power unit maintenance
- Re-assembly
- Health & safety features
- Lubrication and fuelling
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Starting and pre-cutting checks
- Site safety awareness
- Cross-cutting and stacking timber
This course runs Monday to Wednesday from 9.00am to 4.30pm.
Courses funded by government teaching skills like chainsaw maintenance, coppicing, woodland management, and marketing and selling timber are now available.
The Forestry Training Fund is for people considering a change of career or those who are seeking to build and diversify their skills in forestry.
Examples of courses which are covered by the fund include:
- coppicing
- chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting
- managing your woodland
- planning and planting a new woodland
- marketing and selling timber
- fencing and hedge laying
The government is offering 100% funding for eligible courses and expect grants to be in the range of £150 – £3,000. Funding will be paid directly to the training provider. Applications for funding to cover training courses can be made multiple times as long as it can be demonstrated that individual courses are developing a person’;s career.

The government has committed to increasing tree-planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares a year by the end of Parliament to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The short, practical training courses will be paid for by a £700,000 allocation from the £750m Nature for Climate Fund and will help grow the forestry sector so that we have enough people with the right skills to plan, plant, and manage new woodlands.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Individuals who operate chainsaws as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry, or other industries. It will provide the individual with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to maintain a chainsaw and crosscut timber safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation.
You will need good written and verbal understanding of Maths and English.
This course is suitable for those over the age of 16.
Candidates will gain an accredited NPTC City & Guilds Certificate in Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross Cutting which is valid for life.
Candidates who successfully complete this qualification could go on to increase their level of proficiency through consolidation practice within a working environment, or develop skills in safely operating chainsaws, e.g., Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Felling Small Trees up to 380mm.
A mixture of both verbal and practical assessment.

Our costs include the City & Guilds registration and assessment fees, and we do not charge VAT.
If you wish to hire either a Husqvarna or Stihl chainsaw from us, we do have a limited number so it is on a first come, first serve basis, the hire fee is £100.00 for both the course and assessment, which includes fuel and 2 stroke oil.
The college do not supply PPE. PPE is up to the candidate/employer to supply:
- Chainsaw protective boots (complying with EN 20345)
- Chainsaw protective helmet (complying with EN 397)
- Ear defenders (complying with EN 352)
- Face Visor (complying with EN 1731/Safety Glasses EN 166)
- Chainsaw protective trousers (type C) (complying with EN 381-5)
- Chainsaw protective gloves (complying with EN 381-7)
- A first aid kit (to include large wound dressing)
