Brinsbury College champions innovation in Growing Sussex project

21 July 2025

Brinsbury College is proud to be a key partner in the transformative Growing Sussex  initiative, led by West Sussex County Council.

Backed by £3.8 million from the UK’s 5G Innovation Regions programme, this pioneering project is set to revolutionise sustainable food and drink production through cutting-edge 5G and AI technologies.

As part of the collaboration, Brinsbury is developing a range of user case projects alongside other horticultural, agricultural and educational organisations.

Paul Burry, Head of Learning at Brinsbury College, said: “We use a variety of technology to capture a wealth of data, from monitoring the health of our livestock to information around weather, soil condition and much more.

“This all enables us to accurately structure our seasonal calendar for our estate, and gives our students access to use that data to support their studies and ensure they are future-ready when they leave college and enter their chosen industry.

“The Growing Sussex project has given us the opportunity to capture more data, explore using more integrated systems as well as providing improved connectivity which benefits not only the college, but also supports the expansion of 5G in more rural areas.”

These partnerships are driving the creation of digital applications and new qualifications in agriculture, land management, and food production.

The initiative is focused on building a skilled, future-ready workforce equipped to harness advanced digital tools. It’s hoped there will be enhanced career opportunities for students in horticulture, agriculture, and viticulture – sectors which are vital to the region’s economy and sustainability goals.

Growing Sussex is setting the standard for digital transformation in UK growing regions – and Brinsbury College is proud to be at the heart of it.
