COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is the natural progression from level 2. There is delivery of more advanced forging techniques, in addition to welding processes, sheet metal, and fine metalwork. There are a number of drawing & design units, and business studies as part of the curriculum. You will be expected to study independently, conducting research and keep a technical journal throughout the course. The course is designed to help you develop your skills to allow you have the broadest choice of progression when you graduate.

The course is open to anyone with a level 2 qualification in the subject, or prior industrial experience. An interest in art and design will be an advantage. Maths and English qualifactions will be needed as there is an equal weight to the written aspects of the course as the practical
After successful completion of this course you should be in a strong position to find employment within the blacksmithing and associated industries or set up in self-employment. The qualification will also allow you to progress onto higher education.
Assessment is coursework based. Learners complete both practical and written work, which is then assessed against a given criterion to determine a final grade.
There is a £300 compulsory fee which pays towards PPE, steel and fuel. Additionally, Learners will need to supply their own steel toe capped boots and jeans for use in the forge, at their own expense.
Anyone under 19 years old, (when you start your course), who does not have GCSE’;s in English and Maths at grade 4 or higher, will have to re-sit them. Every piece made during the course has associated paperwork, plus there is health and safety paperwork to complete, so please do expect to be doing paperwork/computer work.
