COURSE OVERVIEW
This qualification is designed for those that wish to work within the Horticulture industry or have a passion for Horticulture. The course provides you with a breadth of technical and practical skills, supported with the knowledge and understanding of Horticulture techniques, plant science and practical skills. All of which will equip you to transition into a range of employment opportunities, or onto further learning and training within the horticultural industry.
This qualification delivers these units and modules:
- plant and soil science
- plant identification
- the safe use of equipment and machinery
- pests and diseases
- plant health
- pruning
- maintaining trees and shrubs
- Horticulture business skills
- Horticulture production
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will need to have achieved 4 or more GCSEs between grade 9-4 (previous grade structure A-C) including English, Maths and a Science
Or
Successful completion of a related Level 2 qualification and GCSE maths or English at grade C/4 or above
Or
Mature students (19+) without the above requirements will be considered through our interview process.
You may want to start your own business or join a local horticultural company and work your way up to management level.
You may wish to progress onto an Advanced Apprenticeship in
Horticulture, which allows you to combine working for a Public
Garden or Park, a Landscape firm, Nursery or a similar job, and
typically attend one day a week at College or with a Training
Provider.
You could also progress to Higher Education or into an exciting career.

You will be assessed each day to monitor your progress and
work towards your target grade. There is a mix of practical, synoptic assessments,
and exams as part of this qualification.
Synoptic assessments
Where a candidate is given a problem to solve or an outcome
to achieve. An example of this would be to plan and maintain a garden design from a brief
Externally marked exam
This exam is externally set and externally marked, and
will be taken either online through City & Guilds’; computer-based testing platform or as a paper-based test.
Internally
marked
theory exam
This theory exam is externally set, internally marked and
externally moderated.
Portfolio of
evidence
This unit will be assessed by a portfolio of evidence,
externally verified by City & Guilds.
Student will be expected to provide their own Steel toe capped boots and wear clothing appropriate to all weather conditions.
There is
the chance to be able to undertake NPTC competency industry qualifications, but
there will be a cost for registration and the assessments. Qualifications such
as PA1-PA6 Herbicide application and knap sack spaying, Strimmer, rotary mower,
hedge trimmer and hand held blower qualifications.
Horticulture is a vibrant sustainable industry with many career opportunities. We have excellent connections with employers and you will be expected to undertake industry work experience as part of this qualification. There is a shortage of trained Horticulturalists in the UK at the present time and there will never be a shortage of jobs in this industry. Complete each step of the application form and then submit your completed form. We’ll let you know when we’ve safely received it with an acknowledgement email.
Application Review Meeting
Before offering you a place at college, we’ll meet with you (either in person, by telephone or online). We’ll send you a link to our booking page where you can select a time that’s convenient for you.
Accept Your Place
Offers will be sent to you via the email address you have provided. The offer will be conditional, based on predicted GCSE grades. You’ll need to accept your offer within 14 days to secure your place.
