Make the most of these extraordinary times and gain a nationally-recognised qualification. A short online course is a significant first step to improving your skills and achieving your career goals.
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship in Farriery. You will learn the basics of forgework, (including metallurgy), horse biology and horse handling, along with welding, thermal cutting processes, freehand drawing, and technical drawing.
This means you will gain experience in the Forge, using traditional equipment such as the hearth fire, anvil, and hammers to create your own tool set, tailored to becoming a Farrier. Some of this tool set will then be used to make a multi-component piece, (such as a hanging basket bracket), to show your range of skills and your ability to apply them.
You will also get some experience in the equine yard, studying horses and learning how to properly handle them, essential skills when operating as a Farrier.
Finally, the course also offers the opportunity to undertake the Scientific Horseshoeing Course, in conjunction with Manchester University, set up and led by Dr Mark Caldwell.
Please be aware that there is written work which will need to be completed, within set time frames and to a set standard. If you need additional help with reading or writing, please let us know at your interview and we can arrange for help prior to the start of the course.
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will need a
minimum of two GCSEs at grade 4, (or ‘C’;), or above to be accepted onto the
course.
Ideally you
will also have a keen interest in horses, (although this is not essential), and
be willing to learn metalworking techniques.
Following the
course, learners will be qualified and prepared to begin the apprenticeship to
become a Farrier. However, with the additional skills learnt from the
forgework, welding, thermal cutting processes, freehand drawing, and technical
drawing, learners are also able to pursue other paths, such as becoming a Fabricator-Welder,
or even continue onto the level 3 Blacksmithing course.
For those
wishing to pursue the Farriery apprenticeship, staff at the college are willing
to help you find an appropriate placement, however! You are ultimately
responsible for this and should look to contact an Approved Training Farrier,
(ATF), as early as possible having started your course.
Based on the
timing of the course, 75% of the course is coursework based and assessed. The
remaining 25% is assessed by a synoptic project, which will be undertaken
throughout the year. This synoptic assessment only accounts for one of the
seven units, however.
There is
written work which accompanies almost every aspect of the course, so please do
expect to do writing.
Compulsory fees are £500.00. This will include; Toolbox, hammer, tongs, apron, rule, department polo shirt, block brush, centre punch and callipers, which students will keep this on leaving in addition to resources, materials and PPE.

Please phone to enquire for course costs, additional information is also available on the Chichester College website under the Financial Support section. (Financial Support | Chichester College).
Anyone under 19 years old, (when you start your course), who does
not have GCSE’;s in English and Maths at grade 4 or higher, will have to re-sit
them in order to achieve a grade 4. Each piece/project made during the course has associated paperwork and evaluation, plus there
