COURSE OVERVIEW
This Level 2 upholstery and soft furnishings diploma course is designed to provide you with excellent knowledge and practical foundation skills in modern upholstery, traditional upholstery and soft furnishings. This mixed course will give learners the opportunity to build skills and knowledge in all three disciplines;
Modern Upholstery – This unit enables learners to prepare and produce items of modern furniture upholstery. Learners will understand the functions of tools & equipment, methods of securing upholstery covers, trimmings and finishings, commonly used fittings, and how to deal with problems. Learners will also develop the skills including preparing the frame, application of modern suspensions and fillings, positioning and securing covers, trimmings and finishings, and maintaining safe working practices.
Traditional Upholstery – This unit enables learners to prepare and produce items of traditional furniture upholstery. Learners will understand furnishing regulations requirements, methods of securing traditional support materials, trimmings and finishings, the function of tools and equipment, and how to deal with problems. Learners will also develop the skills including checking/preparing the frame, building foundations of support materials, tying in springs, carrying out deep buttoning techniques, and maintaining safe working practices.
Soft Furnishings – This unit enables learners to prepare and produce simple components by hand and with sewing machines, for use in soft furnishings. Learners will understand the functions of equipment, marking and cutting processes, stitching and finishing methods, techniques for completing seams and how to deal with problems. Learners will also develop the skills including organising tools, equipment and materials, preparing and assembling components, and maintaining safe working practices.
This qualification enables learners to develop the knowledge and skills required for employment, apprenticeships or further study.
The qualification supports career progression in modern upholstery, traditional upholstery and making soft furnishings.
The course runs 2 days a week over 34 weeks, term time, from September – June.

Maths and English – If you are under 19 and have not achieved GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at grade 4 (or grade C) by the start of the course, you will be required to retake these subject(s) during the year as part of your timetable.
You will be provided with a recommended list of materials to purchase.
We provide your PPE, except your safety boots which you will need to purchase if you do not currently own.
You will be required to provide your top material and your piece of furniture for assessment. We will provide you with advice and guidance on what is expected.
Please do not source your material or furniture without prior discussion with the course team.
Course Fees
If you are aged between 16-18 at the beginning of your course, you do not have to pay tuition or exam fees for the majority of courses. If you are 19 or over when you start your course, you will have to contribute to your course fees in line with government guidelines.
